A life changing experiencePosted on August 11, 2014 | Written by Alexis
My name is Cristina, and I am a tenth grade student who attended the Forum for Young Canadians in March 2014. Forum week was one of the best weeks of my life, and it has helped me in so many different aspects of my life. I’ve always been a shy person, who often took a fair amount of time trying to make friends. Being at Forum, surrounded by so many amazing people, helped me to become more outgoing, and helped me to become better at making friends, and putting myself out there in situations where I normally wouldn’t.
Rooming with people who I had never met before, from completely different parts of Canada was something I had approached a little apprehensively. By the end of the week, I realized that it was one of the best things that have ever happened to me. Over the course of the week I became amazing friends with my roommates, and that led to me meeting even more people, many of whom I am still in touch with. Since returning from Forum, I have found that I have an easier time making conversation with new people and with making friends in a room full of strangers. Forum also helped me to better understand the Canadian government and how it works. After completing the Forum program, I found it much easier to make connections in social studies class and to understand the topics we covered, because I had learned about them and more during my experience in Ottawa. I found myself finishing ninth grade with one of the highest averages in social studies. Participating in the mock election and discussions and hearing some really interesting presentations has also increased my interest in politics and has made me more eager to participate in them. Attending the Forum for Young Canadians was life changing for me, I think it made me not only a better, more confident person, but also a better Canadian citizen.
On the first day of the program, we were told of something called “Forum magic”, and that this “magic” would leave us with one of the best weeks of our lives, truthfully, I was skeptical. On my last night at Forum, I realized that I truly believed in the “Forum Magic”, as it has left me with some of the most amazing friends, who are some of the most important people in my life, and with the memories of a true once in a lifetime experience. I would recommend the Forum for Young Canadians to anyone, and everyone who wants to have one of the best weeks of their life.
