Forum for Young Canadians is looking for Group Leaders to volunteer for one week to work with high school and Cégep students from across Canada.
FORUM FOR YOUNG CANADIANS
Forum for Young Canadians is Canada’s premier civics education program for students aged 15-19 years old. Forum brings students to Ottawa for a week of intensive academic adventure immersing them in the exciting world of national politics and public affairs. After almost 40 years, this program remains vital for the continuation of Canada’s informed, active citizenship.
Students qualify for Forum based on sound academic performance, social and leadership skills, engagement in extra-curricular activities, and an interest in current affairs. Participants in the program spend one week in Ottawa with 100 other young leaders from coast to coast to coast. Their classroom is Parliament Hill and their teachers are Ministers, Members of Parliament, Senators, senior public servants, members of the national media, and business leaders.
VOLUNTEER GROUP LEADERS
Each Group Leader is responsible for a group of approximately 10 students. He/she facilitates group meetings where participants examine issues addressed during seminars and prepare for the following day’s activities. Group Leaders review the presentations made by guest speakers and curriculum materials with participants. It is the Group Leader’s role to create an atmosphere conducive to learning, to stimulate curiosity, and to encourage participation by all youth.
Group Leaders are individuals working in the Public Service of Canada (including government agencies, the Canadian Forces, and the RCMP). A Group Leader candidate should possess good communication skills, be bilingual, and have demonstrated ability and experience in working with youth groups. Selection is based on the candidate’s professional experience, ability to work with youth and adults, and understanding of Forum’s objectives.
As a Group Leader, you will live in residence with the students for the duration of the session to which you are assigned and must have the stamina to follow a demanding week. You should expect long, active days, which can begin before 8:00 am and end after 11:00 pm. As a group Leader you are required to devote full-time participation to the program; attend all program functions; and adhere to the Forum for Young Canadians rules and non-partisan status while serving in the program.
Group Leaders must reside with the students and share a double occupancy room with another Group Leader. Accommodation, meals, and travel in Ottawa during the program are provided by Forum. Travel costs to and from Ottawa are not covered by Forum and are the responsibility of the applicant’s department.
Applicants should complete their application and submit it to Forum by November 1st of the year before the sessions. Paper and PDF application forms are also available.
The Foundation requires that the selected candidates complete a Police Record Check for Service with the Vulnerable Sector. Only candidates with a “clear” record will be chosen as Group Leaders.
MANDATORY TRAINING SESSION
Selected Group Leaders will be required to attend a full day orientation and training session from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm on the Saturday before the start of their session.
